Jenny, I understand what you're saying but believe me it's no fun growing old especially if you don't have someone by your side to give you a glass of water and offer you a kind word. The elderly are dying from loneliness and nobody sees them. I hate to be so negative but I have seen it all. I know that the point that you're trying to make is to be grateful for a long life because to grow old is a privilege but it's not always the blessing that we think it is for some people. I am older and disillusioned. Hope you have a long and HEALTHY life so that I can continue reading your wonderful posts.
Yvonne, I'm so sorry. I can hear the heart ache in your comment. You're so right. The elderly are not taken care of the way they should be. I was lucky to see my mom at her parent's side until the very end and I know that is not the case for so many. The message I was trying to portray was not just that we should be grateful to grow old but that we should be grateful to care for the elderly. And I think the undertone of my writing in general is an attempt to rewire a lot of the programming we receive societally about what is important and what makes for a good life. Western culture is so terrified of aging and dying and I think that is a big part of the problem and why we have a tendency to cast our elders away. Sending you love, thank you as always for reading!
Our society tends to be so negative about growing older, so I really loved this piece! The way you write is lovely and this is such a beautiful image: "And that when it’s hard for my old soul to sleep, someone who loves me gets up to get me a glass of water and opens my window just so that I can feel the cool breeze." Thank you for sharing!
